International employment law matters: expertise in Dutch employment law

As an employment attorney with extensive experience in national and international employment law matters, I specialise in cases involving Dutch employment law. The globalisation of the labour market means that more and more companies and employees are facing cross-border employment law matters. Think of international employment contracts, expats and situations where employees work for a foreign employer in the Netherlands.

Although the employment relationship has an international character, in many cases Dutch law continues to apply. This may result, for example, from contractual agreements between the employer and employee, or from specific rules of private international law determining which law applies.

Common international employment law cases

International employment law cases in which I assist as an attorney include:

  • Cross-border employment contracts: when drafting or assessing employment contracts, it is crucial that the provisions comply with Dutch employment law. This also applies to employees temporarily working in the Netherlands or Dutch employees working for a foreign employer in the Netherlands.
  • Conflict resolution: in international employment disputes, the question of which law is applicable can be crucial for the resolution of the conflict. If Dutch law applies, I offer specialised legal support, even if part of the case takes place outside the Netherlands.
  • Expats and local employment conditions: expats face special employment conditions and legal challenges. For them too, correct compliance with Dutch employment law – by the employer – such as dismissal protection is of great importance.

The importance of Dutch employment law in an international context

In today’s globalised economy, we see more and more Dutch companies operating internationally and foreign companies operating in the Netherlands. This often raises complex legal issues that need to be addressed accurately to ensure that companies and employees have a good understanding of their rights and obligations.

Even in an international setting, Dutch employment law offers a lot of protection to employees. Dutch laws and regulations on terms and conditions of employment, dismissal law and working conditions often remain applicable regardless of whether an employer or employee is abroad. It is therefore vital to ensure that international employment contracts and other legal documents comply with these standards.
